Plot twist generator

Original twists for eight genres, each with advice on planting it, so readers gasp first and nod a moment later.

Hidden motiveMystery

The burglar broke in to put something back, not to take something.

How to plant it

  • Make the stated reason almost good enough, then let one action go further than that reason needs.
  • Have the character react strongly to a detail everyone else thinks is unimportant.

Twist 1 of 96 · no repeats until you’ve seen them all

What makes a twist work

A good twist is a surprise that was fair all along. On a second reading every clue should be there in plain sight, explained away by the characters or hidden among more interesting things. That is why each twist here comes with its kind, such as a hidden identity, a false premise or a role reversal, and two ways to plant it early.

Choose a genre or deal from every genre at once; the generator shuffles the list and won’t repeat a twist until you have seen them all. Twists travel well, so try one from a different genre: a fairy-tale reversal can give a family drama new teeth. Then work backwards from the reveal and decide which three or four moments earlier in the story will carry its clues.

Questions

How do I stop a twist feeling like a cheat?

Plant it. Readers forgive almost any surprise if, looking back, the clues were there. Show them early, then give the reader a better explanation to believe in the meantime.

Where in the story should the twist go?

Often at the midpoint or near the end of the second act, once readers have settled on a theory. The story structure planner shows where those beats fall for your word count.

Can I use these twists in my writing?

Yes. They were written for Fresh Fable as starting points; how you build the story around one is up to you.
